Meet Shane Finn… Shane Finn is an ultra-athlete, speaker, entrepreneur, and charity fundraiser from Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Since 2010 Shane has been putting his body to the test and pushing limits to see exactly how far he can go. Aged only 17, Shane took on his first marathon and raised €8000 for a the charity close to his heart, Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland. Incredibly, in 2014, Shane completed 12 marathons in 12 days, raising €36,000 for SBHI.
Then, in 2017, Shane blew everyone away and conquered 24 marathons in 24 days around his native Ireland, raising a staggering €142,500 for SBHI! On top of these achievements, Shane is an established presence in the health and fitness industry having founded the WK Fitness company and, more recently, Shane Finn Training. From this platform Shane works as guest lecturer at Sacred Heart University, CT.
Shane has spoken to audiences in some of the most influential corporate settings including, ESB International, IBM, and Boston Scientific. As a brand ambassador, Shane has worked with significant companies such as John West, Brita Ireland, Origin (performance foods), and Sport RX.
American Ultra – Running and cycling from San Francisco to New York City in 36 days, and all to raise over €250,000 for charity! On 29 th March 2019 Shane Finn will start his journey of over 5000 kilometres from the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, ending 36 days later on the Brooklyn Bridge, NYC.
The aim is for Shane to cycle 270km for three consecutive days, then run 55/60km a day for three consecutive days, and then to repeat this pattern six times – no rest days, just 36 days of relentless physical and mental endurance to support those who live with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
This will be Shane’s greatest challenge to date and will take in arid desert, snow-capped mountains, endless highways, and everything in between. We are seeking support for every step and revolution along the way and Shane can’t wait to meet you along the way on this arduous journey!
Shane will travel coast to coast under his own steam, from San Francisco to New York City. Along this journey he will make his way through the states of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York!
…because living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus can be extremely challenging, Shane wants to ensure that everyone in Ireland who lives with the conditions gets the essential support they need.Spina bifida – one or more vertebrae of the spine are not completely formed. Instead they are split, and the spinal cord and its coverings usually protrude through a sac-like bulge on the back which is covered with a thin membrane. Due to the sensitive nature of the spinal cord, this leads to physical issues with mobility, continence, and other related conditions such as pressure sores.
Hydrocephalus – Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an imbalance between the amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the cranium/head and the rate at which it is absorbed. This imbalance causes significant pressure which has to be relieved by a device called a ‘shunt’, a rubber tube which is inserted internally from the head to the stomach allowing the CSF to drain away. The injury which takes place to the brain because of this pressure can lead to issues with memory, cognitive processing, and behaviour.
65% of people in Ireland who have spina bifida also have hydrocephalus, which is why SBHI works to support those with one or both conditions. Those supported often experience discrimination, isolation, and challenges to their own mental health. SBHI works to facilitate the measures necessary to overcome these issues.
Shane wants to see everyone living with the conditions reach their full potential, and he knows this can only happen with the support of SBHI. Through creating awareness and raising funds for this charity, Shane is helping to ensure that thousands of people in Ireland can avail of essential services. These include respite breaks, family support services, Resource Centre opportunities, education support, and social events.
